Lake Pavin
The lake was formed by volcanic activity 7000 years ago. The place is
considered the youngest crater lake of France. Its diameter is about 800 meters
and it is the deepest in the Auvergne - 100 m deep at its center.

The
Volacania Museum is a great architectural work of the
Austrian architect Hans Hollein, who won the competition. It
was completed by 2002.
The building
is partially buried in the ground, creating diverse opportunities
for display presentation of the volcanic theme. Examples
include a simulation of a crater with a bold balcony floating above, creating a
dramatic glimpse. Conic space covered within its inner part with gilt metal,
simulates various volcanic crater and an atrium display of local flora etc..
